Academy Trained Service Dogs

All Academy Dogs are donated by SSDI free of charge.

Academy dog clients pay $250 to complete Phase 0, a workbook which mentally, physically, and emotionally prepares you to work with one of our service dogs.

These teams still progress though our training program with our trainers to ensure the client can successfully ask the dog for all of the commands they know.

Once placed with the dog, you are responsible for continuing the dog's health insurance plan (normally through FIGO) and veterinary wellness plan.

Clients are also responsible for maintaining the welfare of the dog. The monthly budget below is a good estimate of what the financial responsibility of owning a dog looks like per month.

Owner Trained Service Dogs

An Owner Trained service dog from SSDI means that SSDI will evaluate a dog the client already owns for the service work they require and if accepted, they will enter into our Service Dog Training Program.

Owner trainers must have their dogs evaluated and accepted into our Service Dog Training Program, these evaluations cost $50 in total per dog.

Owner-Assisted clients pay $250 to complete Phase 0, a workbook which mentally, physically, and emotionally prepares you to work with one of our service dogs PRIOR to obtaining a dog.

Dogs in our Owner Trainer Service Dog Training Program progress through prospect phases (1 & 2), service dog in training phases (3a, 3b, 4 & 5), and service dog graduation at the end of phase 6. Training sessions occur in private lesson, group lesson, or digital lesson settings. The in person training program costs $300 per month and it includes weekly individual trainings in person, as well as online communication for questions and additional help. There is a minimum of a 6-month contract for this service. The digital training program costs $200 per month and it includes weekly individual trainings and online communication for questions and additional help. Clients that choose the digital training program are also required to meet in person (at the client's cost) with one of our SSDI representatives within our nationwide network of trainers. There is a minimum of a 6-month contract for this service and the in person meetups must occur at least once in each 6-month period.

In addition, the client is responsible for obtaining and maintaining a health insurance plan and veterinary wellness plan for the dog and maintaining the welfare of the dog. These expenses are outlined in the infographic to the left (Average Monthly Budget).

Owner-Assisted Trained Service Dogs

An Owner-Assisted Trained service dog from SSDI means that SSDI will work with a client to find a pre-approved dog that meets their individual needs. There is a  $250 dog finding fee for SSDI trainers and staff to find, evaluate, and approve a dog for our training program that is a suitable candidate for your needs.
