  3. Academy dogs are matched with clients at SSDI’s sole discretion.

  4. Academy dogs must be cared for following SSDI standards.

  5. Academy dogs are donated free of charge, however maintenance costs apply (~$300/month)

DESCRIPTION

An Academy Trained service dog from SSDI means that SSDI obtains, trains and matches our own dogs with clients in need.

In this option SSDI retains ownership of the dog in perpetuity. This option is recommended for clients who are not able to be a part of the training process.

All Academy dogs are placed for a trial period of at least 6 months to ensure the dog can effectively mitigate aspects of the handler's disability and can adapt to the client's daily routine. During the 6 month trial period these clients must complete our Handler Training Program, Service Dog Training Program with the dog, and Team Training. All teams must pass SSDI's Public Access Test at the end of the 6 month trial period.

QUICK FACTS

  1. Owner Trained dogs are owned by the client.

  2. Owner Trained dogs live with their owners unless completing a board and train plan.

  3. Owner Trained dogs must be cared for following SSDI standards.

  4. Owner Trained teams must follow all SSDI standards.

  5. Owner Trained teams pay monthly for training services and are also financially responsible for their dog’s needs which are outlined in our application (~$600/month).

DESCRIPTION

An Owner Trained service dog means that SSDI teaches a client how to train their own dog the skills needed to be an SSDI service dog team.

In this option, the client owns their dog. SSDI’s standards are applied equally to all Owner Trained and Academy Trained teams. These standards include, but not limited to: welfare, training, and follow-up records.

The dog and client work with SSDI trainers to complete our Service Dog Training Program. The client receives instruction from SSDI trainers and applies the lessons to train their dog. In this program the dog lives with the client. Clients must complete our Handler Training Program, Service Dog Training Program with the dog, and Team Training. All teams must pass SSDI's Public Access Test in order to graduate.

Owner training is recommended for our clients who: own a dog or clients who want a dog with medical alert and response or psychiatric tasks.

SSDI does offer a board and train option for Owner Trained service dog teams based upon trainer availability. Board and Train plans are utilized when a client can justify reasonable cause for this option. Clients are still required to complete our Handler Training Program, Service Dog Training Program with the dog, and Team Training. All teams must pass SSDI's Public Access Test in order to graduate.
